came with two friends and talked about the work the Wildlife Center does rescuing injured and orphaned animals. 

The first friend was a Kestrel named Blue who seemed somewhat 
suspicious of the photographer. 
 

“Ohio Wildlife Center (OWC) is a leader in wildlife rehabilitation and conservation education.  We treat nearly 5,000 animals in our wildlife hospital every year and reach thousands of adults and children through education programs.

Jan Walton Rozanski of
Leadership Dublin talked about the opportunities available to those who participate in Leadership Dublin. Several of our members have already completed their program and Betty Clark is in the current class.
 
When Leadership Dublin was launched in 1995, our community began a new era of leadership development and citizen empowerment.
The Leadership Dublin program is designed to increase skills and knowledge in community leadership. Individuals participate in a nine-month learning program unique to Dublin.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio

Kindra is reruiting us to Bowl! We will be organizing a team to bowl against the Dublin Kiwanis (the Frog Jump folks).  Bowl for Kids Sake will be at the Columbus Bowling Palace on February 7, 2009 from 8-5.  It is the 26th year for this event and there will be 2,500 people participating and an estimated 7000 donors. It provides 10% of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) annual budget.

Team members will ask friends and family to donate online to sponsor them.  It’s all automated and very easy.  Beside cash donations BBBS will be accepting in-kind donations.   Our own Gary McNutt is very excited about this – he’s the BBBS chairman for this event.

Kindra also talked about Project Mentor.  The goal of this project is to increase graduation rates in area high schools.  The commitment is 1 hour per week at lunchtime.  If you would like to learn more about Project Mentor or any other BBBS activities you can contact Kindra at (614) 839-2447 ext 121 or at khill@bbbscentralohio.org.

Julie Fletcher of Welcome Warehouse talked about the purpose and needs of Welcome Warehouse today.  Welcome Warehouse Inc.  is a non-profit organization that was inspired by a school nurse and a clinic aide along with a group of moms who wanted to help families temporarily in need in the Dublin community.

Welcome Warehouse provides a convenient Dublin location where community members can drive up to drop off gently used clothing and household items. Items are personally and confidentially distributed to families in need on a case-by-case basis. They are also involved with Adopt a Family.

We can drop needed items at their current location (6500 Shier-Rings Road, Unit O) on the first and third Saturdays of the month between the hours of between the hours of 9 and 11 A.M.  Receipts.  Check the Welcome Warehouse website at http://www.welcomewarehouse.org for items they will accept and for their move to new location happening in January 2009.

Julie mentioned the need for volunteers in many capacities:

• Pickup truck owners who can pickup large items like furniture and mattresses
• Drivers to pickup other items
• Assistance during the times the Warehouse is open to the public
• Volunteers and vehicles to help with their move in January

We heard from Gary Rossner and Ed O’Reilly of the Neil Kennedy Recovery Center in Dublin (left with Kiwanis President Dave Sutherland). 

The Neil Kennedy Recovery Center offers a uniquely diverse and comprehensive continuum of treatment programs, which allows it to tailor treatment to the individual needs of each patient.

Treatment is designed to be gender and culturally specific and to take into consideration co-occurring diagnosis, drug of choice and history of relapse

Have you ever driven a Skid Car or even seen one? How well do you parallel park and do you think you could negotiate a serpentine forwards AND backwards?  Do you know the proper behavior when you are stopped by a law enforcement officer?  Over fifty Dublin teens and some of the volunteer adults put themselves to the test at the Second Annual Dublin Teen Driving Roadeo held on Sunday, September 21, 2008 in the parking lots at the Ashland, Inc offices in Dublin.

This Event, spearheaded by Healthy Communities Healthy Youth with the support of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Dublin, is aimed at improving the driving behavior of Dublin Youth by exposing them to learning activities not usually included in Driver’s Education.

Many volunteers from all areas of the city guided the teens through learning stations and driving activities. Special thanks to the Dublin Police Department and the Washington Township Fire for their leadership in making this event possible and Crown Mercedes and Crown Chrysler Jeep Kia for donating staff time and the use of eight cars.  New features this year included driving the Skid Car with instructors from True Sports / Mid-Ohio Raceway, Impaired driver course set up by the Union County Sheriff’s Department and cars with video provided by 405 Drive Smart in Hilliard.

On July 15, 2008 Mike Hufford gave us an update on the activities of the Miracle League of Central Ohio.  They are working to expand their playground facility.  To that end they are having their second annual “The Black and Tan” Dinner at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Saturday, November 1, 2008.  For more details on this event, go to http://muirfieldvillage.org/27101.html.

A few years back a group of Dublin residents, businesses, City staff members and our Kiwanis group began working on this the playground to make sure every child has the chance, regardless of their physical abilities, to have fun on a playground.

The universally accessible playground, built adjacent to the Miracle League Field in Darree Fields in Dublin, is designed specifically for children with mobility challenges and other special needs, removing any barriers so all children can play together. The playground is enjoyable to all children, promoting social interaction between children with special needs and typically developing children.
